  • Introduction: Why Study Sports in the Middle East? by Nicholas S. Hopkins

Introduction: Why Study Sports in the Middle East?

    Nicholas S. Hopkins

The sociology of sports in the Middle East has been neglected compared to other world regions. This volume aspires to encourage a greater focus on this topic. Here are assembled papers that discuss various aspects of this subject. As it happens all deal with football (soccer) largely in Egypt but including other Middle Eastern countries. Some are historically or politically oriented while others take a more sociological approach. Papers deal with the relation between organized sports and fans, with the special place of youngsters and women in sports, or with the role of sports in a more general understanding of culture and society as indicators of modernization and other facets of social change. Sportive competitions arouse keen passions around such issues as gender, class, and nationality, while they raise questions about leadership on and off the field, and about the economic impact of the games. The topic needs more research.

  • Introduction: Global Perspectives on Marriage, Crisis, and Nation. Domestic Tensions, National Anxieties: Global Perspectives on Marriage, Crisis, and Nation by Hanan Kholoussy and Kristin Celello

Introduction: Global Perspectives on Marriage, Crisis, and Nation. Domestic Tensions, National Anxieties: Global Perspectives on Marriage, Crisis, and Nation

    Hanan Kholoussy and Kristin Celello

The introduction argues that studying marriage in times of crisis provides an important lens onto the relationship between the institution and the nation. It explores the metaphorical links between marriage and the nation and the concrete ways in which the modern state has intervened in the private, marital lives of its citizens. The introduction highlights key points of comparison, notably gender, the tension between modernity and tradition, and the line between public and private. It explains why the modern period is a particularly eventful era to examine due to the rise of the modern nation-state, the peak of anticolonial struggles and postcolonial identity formation, and the emergence of media, among other phenomena. The introduction explains the chronological order, and thematic arrangement of the contributions, while providing brief summaries of each one. It concludes by acknowledging the limitations of the volume, while simultaneously proposing additional areas of scholarship.
