Abstract
[This article examines two categories of the dragoman: the tourist guide, and the diplomatic dragoman - who played the role of interpreter between foreign powers (Europe) and the Sublime Porte. The former is frequently quoted in travel accounts, and in spite of his valuable role, he is most often described in derogatory terms. This might be due - as some have suggested - to the fact that these men were considered competitors to then emerging guide books. The second part of the article deals with the diplomatic dragomans, their linguistic training, living conditions, and the evolution of their profession. It presents some case studies of dragomans and their linguistic output. ﺗﺘﻨﺎﻭﻝ ﺍﻟﻤﻘﺎﻟﺔ ﺩﻻﻟﺘﻲّ ﺷﺨﺼﻴﺔ ﺍﻟﺘﺮﺟﻤﺎﻥ: ﺍﻟﺪﻻﻟﺔ ﺍﻟﺘﻲ ﺗﺸﻴﺮ ﺇﻟﻰ ﺍﻟﺘﺮﺟﻤﺎﻥ ﺍﻟﺴﻴﺎﺣﻲ ﺍﻟﺬﻱ ﻛﺎﺩ ﻳﺨﺘﻔﻲ ﺍﻟﻴﻮﻡ٬ ﻭﺗﻠﻚ ﺍﻟﺘﻲ ﺗﺸﻴﺮ ﺇﻟﻰ ﺍﻟﺘﺮﺟﻤﺎﻥ ﺍﻟﺴﻴﺎﺳﻲ ﺍﻟﺬﻱ ﻛﺎﻥ ﻳﻘﻮﻡ ﺑﺪﻭﺭ ﺍﻟﻮﺳﻴﻂ ﺑﻴﻦ ﺍﻟﻘﻮﻯ ﺍﻟﻐﺮﺑﻴﺔ (ﻣﺜﻞ ﺟﻨﻮﺍ ﻭﺍﻟﺒﻨﺪﻗﻴﺔ) ﻭﺍﻟﺒﺎﺏ ﺍﻟﻌﺎﻟﻲ٠ ﺃﻣﺎ ﺍﻟﺘﺮﺟﻤﺎﻥ ﺍﻟﺴﻴﺎﺣﻲ ﻓﻨﺠﺪﻩ ﻣﺬﻛﻮﺭﺍﹰ ﻓﻲ ﻧﺼﻮﺹ ﺃﺩﺏ ﺍﻟﺮﺣﺎﻟﺔ٠ ﻭﺑﺎﻟﺮﻏﻢ ﻣﻦ ﺍﻟﺪﻭﺭ ﺍﻟﻤﻬﻢ ﺍﻟﺬﻱ ﻛﺎﻥ ﻳﻠﻌﺒﻪ ﻓﻲ ﺗﺴﻬﻴﻞ ﺍﻟﺘﻮﺍﺻﻞ ٬ ﻓﺈﻧﻨﺎ ﻛﺜﻴﺮﺍﹰ ﻣﺎ ﻧﺠﺪ ﻫﺬﻩ ﺍﻟﺸﺨﺼﻴﺔ ﻣﻮﺻﻮﻓﺔ ﺑﻜﻠﻤﺎﺕ ﺍﻟﻨﻘﺪ ﻭﺍﻻﺳﺘﻌﻼﺀ٠ ﻓﻬﻞ ﻳﻌﻮﺩ ﺫﻟﻚ ﺇﻟﻰ ﻣﻨﺎﻓﺴﺔ ﻛﺘﺐ ﺍﻹﺭﺷﺎﺩ ﺍﻟﺴﻴﺎﺣﻲ - ﻛﻤﺎ ﺍﻓﺘﺮﺽ ﺍﻟﺒﻌﺾ؟ ﺗﺘﻨﺎﻭﻝ ﺍﻟﻜﺎﺗﺒﺔ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﺠﺰﺀ ﺍﻟﺜﺎﻧﻲ ﻣﻦ ﺍﻟﻤﻘﺎﻟﺔ ﺷﺨﺼﻴﺔ ﺍﻟﺘﺮﺟﻤﺎﻥ ﺍﻟﺪﺑﻠﻮﻣﺎﺳﻲ ﺍﻟﺘﻲ ﻧﺸﺄﺕ ﻣﻦ ﺍﻟﺤﺎﺟﺔ ﺇﻟﻰ ﻭﺳﻄﺎﺀ ﻟﺘﺮﺟﻤﺔ ﺍﻟﺮﺳﺎﺋﻞ ﻭﺍﻟﻤﻘﺎﺑﻼﺕ ﺑﻴﻦ ﻣﻤﺜﻠﻲ ﺍﻟﻘﻮﻯ ﺍﻟﻐﺮﺑﻴﺔ ﻭﺍﻟﺒﺎﺏ ﺍﻟﻌﺎﻟﻲ٠]
