Abstract

[This article argues that the fixed binaries and stereotypes that cast the East (the Orient) and the West (the Occident) as two irreconcilable cultures and civilizations did not limit the possibility of developing collegial ties among Middle Eastern, French, and British scholars, particularly those who pursued similar scholarly projects in the nineteenth century. To demonstrate this point, the author examines the interaction between Rifa'a al-Tahtawi (1801–1873) and his French mentors, and the scholarly cooperation between Edward Lane (1801-1876) and Sheikh Ibrahim al-Disuqi (1811-1883). تحاول هذه المقالة أن تثبت أن القوالب النمطية الثابتة التي تصور الشرق والغرب باعتبارهما ثقافتين وحضارتين مختلفتين تماماً لم تشكل عائقاً أمام إقامة علاقات ودية بين علماء من الشرق الأوسط وفرنسا وبريطانيا، وبخاصة بين ﻣؘﻦ يدرسون ويبحثون في مواضيع متشابهة في القرن التاسع عشر. ولتوضيح هذه الفكرة، تحلل كاتبة المقالة علاقة رفاعة الطهطاوي (١٨٠١-١٨٧٣) مع مدرسيه الفرنسيين والتعاون العلمي بين إدوارد لين (١٨٠١-١٨٧٦) والشيخ إبراهيم الد سوقي (١٨١١-١٨٨٣) .]
