Abstract

[The humanities today face a series of challenges—including an inbred narcissism, chronic under-funding, and social irrelevance. This essay explains some of the reasons for this state of things. It advocates a new focus on getting our hands dirty, struggling with the slow, messy, real-life details necessary for integrating our points with the ongoing work of scientists, engineers, policy makers. In addition to pursuing rigorous scholarship, humanists can help society become more sensitive to the humanistic elements of our techno-scientific age. تواجه العلوم الٳنسانية اليوم سلسلة من التحديات، منها النرجسية المتأصلة ومشاكل قلة التمويل المزمنة وعدم التواصل مع المجتمع. توضح هذه المقالة بعض أسباب هذه الحالة، داعية ٳلى الاشتباك العملي مع الواقع والكد مع تفاصيل الحياة المملة والفوضوية اللازمة لدمج آراﺋﻨﺎ مع العمل المستمر الذي يقوم به العلماء والمهندسون وصانعو السياسات. فبالٳضافة ٳلى تبني البحث العلمي المضني، يمكن للعلوم الٳنسانية أيضاً مساعدة المجتمع على أن يصبح أكثر حساسية في تعاطيه مع العناصر الٳنسانية في عصرنا العلمي التقني .]
