Abstract

[Edward Said's Orientalism is a landmark in the humanities. Its publication was followed by a plethora of comments and criticisms. This article discusses the prejudiced claims of Orientalist critics, on the one hand, and the reproaches of Marxists, on the other, emphasizing Said's refutation of Bernard Lewis's claims. The article also considers the dogmatic aspect of criticism from the left, while stressing the methodological and analytical issues raised by Ijaz Ahmed and Sadek Jalal al-Azm beyond their pious defense of Karl Marx. The originality and depth of Said's thought are consistently demonstrated in the article. /‮بعد كتاب الاستشراق تعرّض إدوارد سعيد كمفكر وكإنسان لهجمات من الفكر الاستشراقي التقليدي عموماﹰ، مثل هجوم برنارد لويس عليه متهماﹰ إياه بالتعصب العرقي، وكأنه قدم ﻫﺠﻮﻣﺎﹰ على غرب جوهري ظل مطابقاﹰ لنفسه في عدائه لشرق جوهري أصيل٠ وحينما نشر سيرته الذاتية خارج المكان تعرض لتكذيب بعيد عن الحقيقة لكل ما يمثله٠ ومن ناحيه أخرى جاء هجوم اليسار ممثلاﹰ في إعجاز أحمد وصادق جلال العظم٠ فماهي النقاط المفيدة في هذا النقد اليساري وما هي نقاط الجمود وضيق الأفق في هذا النقد؟ هل وقف عند الدفاع عن كارل ماركس لتبرئته مما اتهمه به سعيد من تبنﹴ لمواقف استشراقية، استناداﹰ إلى فقرة في مقاله عن الاستعمار البريطاني في الهند؟ وهل كان النقد من ناحية المنهج ﻛﺎﺷﻔﺎﹰ عن ثغرات في تنظير سعيد في كتاباته ﻋﻤﻮﻣﺎﹰ؟ يتناول المقال مناقشة تلك الأسئلة من زاوية تكشف أصالة متن سعيد وعمقه٠‬]
