Abstract

[The article is composed of two fragments. The first is a sketch of the author's upbringing in the center of Cairo in Shari' Mohammad Ali, the street forming the backbone of the old commercial as well as the entertainment area of the city of Cairo in the last century. It highlights the exceptional choice of joining the Department of English at Fuad I University (the only modern university in Egypt in 1944) for a young girl, the only member of her family who could read and speak English. Her situation was special since there were no extended family pressures on her to conform to the middle class requirements of upward mobility in a medical career or a secure teaching position in mathematics, guaranteed and financed by the ministry of education. The second fragment carries memories of January 26, 1952, the massacre of a contingent of the Egyptian police force in Isma'iliyya by heavily armed British troops the previous day and the resulting havoc and conflagrations that broke out in Cairo on that memorable Saturday. The author foreshadows her personal and private reminiscences of that day and the sad times that followed, ending with the army coup of July 23, 1952. /صفحات مختارة من ذكريات تمتد (عند اكتمالها) ﺑﻄﻮﻝ ثمانية من عقود القرن العشرين٠ يدور الجزء الأول من الصفحات المنشورة في هذا العدد حول نشأة الكاتبة في بيت صغير في شارع محمد علي في الثلاثينيات من القرن، وخروج والدها من سوق الموبيليات بالعتبة في ضيافة وحماية بلدياته من بني سند (مديرية أسيوط) الذين كانوا متمركزين في السوق، يستأجرون المحلات التجارية الواقعة تحت ﻋﻤﺎﺭﺗﻲ الأوقاف التي تشكل الضلع الجنوبي لميدان العتبة٠ تحيي في ذاكرتها خليط سكان الشارع من جنسيات مختلفة، مصريين وأرمن ويونانيين وقبارصة وسودانيين ويهود، يتجول بينهم جنود ﺍﻹﺣﺘﻼﻝ ﺍﻹﻧﺠﻠﻴﺰﻱ وجنود الحلفاء أثناء ﺍﻟﺤﺮﺏ العالمية الثانية٠ يقدم الجزء الثاني ذكريات يوم ٢٦ يناير ١٩٥٢، إذ ﺣﻠّﺖ الذكرﻯ الخمسون لذلك اليوم الأسيف بمطلع هذﺍ العام وألحت على الكاتبة بالصور المنشورة في وسائل الإعلام والأحاديث والمناقشات بين من شهدوا هذا اليوم وما سبقه من عدوان القوات الإنجليزية في منطقة القنال، حتى بلغ الذروة في ليلة ٢٥ يناير بمذبحة رجال الشرطة المصريين التي أشعلت أخبارها غضب المصريين في جميع أرجاء البلاد مما أدى إلى اندلاع الحريق الشهير الذي غيّر مسيرة الثورة المصرية ضد ﺍﻹﺣﺘﻼﻝ فانتهت ﺑ ((الحركة المباركة)) يوم ٢٣ يوليو ٠١٩٥٢]
