Abstract

[This study of Somaya Ramadan's Leaves of Narcissus (2001) argues that the details in the text acquire their significance from an existential stance first and foremost. The protagonist, Kemi, is engaged in a relentless battle against the attempts of the community that aim at molding the individual into society's preconceived notions and value system. It is a battle fought with full view of the abyss of nothingness that threatens the individual-a battle for the possible 'recreation' and 'recollection' of a mercurial, half-forgotten 'self'. The pressures and conditions are doubled in the case of women who attempt such preservation, since the margin allowed them is even narrower than that allowed men in the same struggle. This study focuses on a variety of narrative techniques including the relatively independent chapters and the generated network of complex relations between the various chapters. The article shows how the text relies heavily on metaphoric language of a highly evocative nature, and its affinity with the structure of the Arabic poem. /انتهت هذه الدراسة إلى أن الدلالة المحورية التي تدور حولها تفاصيل نص رواية سمية رمضان أوراق ﺍﻟﻨﺮﺟﺲ (٢٠٠١) هي تفاصيل وجودية في الأساس، إذ يسعى الوعي الجمعي إلى ﻗﻤﻊ الذات الفردية وصبّ الأفراد في قوالب حسب مفاهيم ثابتة٠ غير أن البطلة لا تكف طوال النص عن محاولة مستميتة في سبيل اكتشاف الذات والتمسك بها، هروباﹰ من هوّة العدم التي ﻳﺪﻓﻊ ﺍﻟﻤﺠﺘﻤﻊ أفراده إليها دفعاﹰ٠ وتشير الدراسة في هذا الصدد إلى أنه إذا كان الوعي الجمعي يهدف إلى إلباس أفراده ((ماهيات)) سابقة التجهيز لا يشترك الأفراد في صنعها، فإن هذه الماهيات تتضاعف شروطها في حالة ﺍﻹﻧﺎﺙ ﺑﺴﺒﺐ أن هامش الحرية المتاح لهن لا يقارن بما هو متاح للرجال٠ وقد ﺍﺳﺘﺨﻠﺼﺖ الدراسة هذه النتيجة المحورية من خلال النظر في أشكال التعبير المختلفة، بما في ﺫﻟﻚ الاستقلال النسبي ﻟﻔﺼﻮﻟﻬﺎ ﻣﻊ وجود شبكة من العلاقات ﺍﻟﻤﺮﻛﺒﺔ بين مختلف فصول الرواية٠ كما أن تعويل النص على اللغة المجازية ضاعف من قدرة النص على الإيحاء٠]
