Abstract

[Jacques Lacan (1901-1981) is one of the most prominent and influential psychoanalysts in France. His writings and interpretation of the Freudian cannon marked not only the field of psychoanalysis, but also that of literature and linguistics. This translation renders in Arabic a seminal text of Lacan's entitled "le stade de miroir comme formateur de la fonction du Je," which was first presented in the XVIe International Congress of Psychoanalysis in Zurich in 1949, and was subsequently published in the first volume of Lacan's Ecrits. The hermetic and poetic dimension of Lacan's language, combined with his rigorous analysis and multi-disciplinary references, contribute to the beauty and difficulty of the text. The translator captures the nuances of the original French text and provides through translator's notes additional explanations for the lay reader. The introduction presents an overall view of Lacan's works and orientation, and then moves to contextualize the "mirror stage" in the Lacanian corpus, from its first appearance as a focal concept in the mid thirties until its definitive formulation in the 1949 paper. The introduction also analyzes the language of Lacan with its rich texture, double entendres and neologisms. It lays bare the translator's strategies and sensibilities while acknowledging earlier efforts in Arabizing the psychoanalytic lexicon and in exposing in Arabic Lacanian concepts.]
