Abstract

This study addresses the gap in understanding how codeswitching affects emotional perception of single words in bilingual individuals, using the Arabic-English context as a foundation. We aim to explore the influence of personal pronouns and codeswitched structures on emotional valence, arousal, dominance, and processing speed, highlighting the nuanced interplay between language and emotion. Our primary contribution is the development and application of the CARE application, a novel web-based tool for efficient data collection and annotation of emotional rating. This work aims to compile a dataset on the emotional evaluation of codeswitched words, utilizing the CARE application for automated assessement of big data and provision of normed data bases in linguistic and psychological research. By employing a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative analysis with qualitative insights, we investigate how first-person possessive pronouns and codeswitching impact affective evaluation of emotional and neutral nouns and the respective processing speed and word processing speed among Egyptian Arabic-English bilinguals. The findings reveal that while possessive pronouns significantly affect processing speed, codeswitched word structures elicit complex emotional reactions, underscoring the cultural and cognitive dimensions of language processing. This study lays the groundwork for future exploration into codeswitching’s emotional dynamics, offering new directions for sentiment analysis and natural language processing research.
