Abstract

This article explores sibling relations in Mamdūḥ ‘Azzām’s Lā tukhbir al-ḥiṣān (Don’t Tell the Horse) as a political allegory for post-2011 Syrian reality. It relies on Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of polyphony in order to chart the siblings’ different storylines. It shows how the multiple perspectives in ‘Azzām’s novel champion the characters’ voices over a singular authorial voice, as well as portray the intricate unravelling of a patriarchal Arab family. The article reads the contesting narratives of the four siblings as a political allegory that reiterates how post-2011 Syria is not in fact united, politically or socially.

تتناول هذه المقالة علاقات الأخوة في رواية لا تخبر الحصان لممدوح عزام بوصفها أليجوريا سياسية للواقع السوري ما بعد ٢٠١١. تعتمد المقالة نظرية تعدد الأصوات لدى ميخائيل باختين لتتبع سرديات الأخوة المختلفة. وتوضح الكاتبة كيف تنتصر رواية عزام لأصوات الشخصيات المتعددة في مقابل صوت المؤلف الواحد في تصويرها التفكك المعقد لعائلة عربية بطريركية. كما تحلل السرديات المتصارعة للأخوة الأربعة بوصفها أليجوريا سياسية تؤكد أن سوريا ما بعد ٢٠١١ لم تكن في الواقع موحدة، سواء سياسياً أو اجتماعياً.
