Abstract

This article examines brother-sister relations in Naguib Mahfouz’s Bidāya wa-nihāya (The Beginning and the End) and Ghassan Kanafani’s Ma tabaqqā lakum (All That’s Left to You). It analyzes the siblings’ interactions as metaphors for gendered power relations in their surrounding social and national spheres. The author argues that the novels attempt to subvert gender inequalities and asymmetries of power in familial and social relations, and thereby gendered and embodied configurations of the nation-state. However, the entwined, premature deaths of the siblings present a grim outlook on a joint life of loss that they could not avert from womb to tomb.

تتناول هذه المقالة علاقات الأخوَّة في روايتي بداية ونهاية لنجيب محفوظ وما تبقى لكم لغسان كنفاني. تحلل المقالة هذه الرابطة العائلية وما يعتريها من علاقات قوى جندرية غير متكافئة بوصفها تمثيلاً مجازياً لعلاقة الرجل والمرأة على المستوى القومي الأوسع. تَخْلُص الكاتبة إلى أن الروايتين تحاولان زعزعة هذا التفاوت على مستوى العلاقات الأسرية، ومن ثم خلخلة التصورات المتعلقة بالجندر والجسد على المستوى القومي. وبرغم ذلك، يعد موت الإخوة المبكر والمتشابك في كلتا الروايتين تعبيراً عن حياة مشتركة مغرقة في الفقد الذي لا يمكن تلافيه من المهد إلى اللحد.
