Abstract

The Taymūriyya family had a long-lasting effect on the intellectual and political scene in Egypt during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This article addresses how the family’s intellectual legacy nurtured a love for the Arabic language and its literature among its descendants—Muḥammad (1892-1921) and Maḥmūd (1894-1973). The article traces their brotherly relationship through family history, connecting it to the literary development of the Egyptian short story as a response to socio-political concerns during the twentieth century. It demonstrates that the close-knit brotherly bond had a lasting impact on Maḥmūd Taymūr, the younger sibling, influencing both his literary and political worldviews.

كان للعائلة التيمورية أثر طويل الأمد في المشهد الأدبي والفكري والسياسي في مصر خلال القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرين. تتناول هذه المقالة هذا الإرث الفكري للعائلة التيمورية الذي غذى حب اللغة العربية وآدابها في ولديها، محمد(١٨٩٢-١٩٢١) ومحمود(١٨٩٤-١٩٧٣) . وتحلل المقالة العلاقة الأخوية بين محمد ومحمود تيمور من خلال تتبع تاريخ الأسرة التيمورية، مع ربطه بالتطور الأدبي للقصة القصيرة في مصر، الذي جاء استجابة للهموم السياسية والاجتماعية خلال القرن العشرين. كما تستكشف المقالة تأثير تلك الرابطة في آراء محمود تيمور الأدبية والسياسية، باعتباره الأخ الأصغر.
