Abstract

[This article explores how The Tempest can be conceptualized as two plays in one, whereby the apparent play, that of seeming colonization, veils its inversion in what the author terms “speculative autothanatography,” a matter of how the writer may imagine their own death. In this reading of The Tempest, the article situates the setting of the play on the island of Lampedusa, where it is argued that it functions as a strangely liminal world that affirms the afterlife. In doing so, the article also draws attention to the play’s resonances with the Hermetic tradition.
