Abstract

[This article explores Arabic treatments, including tarnslations, of Walter Scott's Talisman in the years 1890-1920, a span of time critical to the Nahḍa, or "Arab Renaissance." It argues that Arab authors and translators saw didactic potential in modern English literature about the Crusades, which scholarship on Arabic has tended to neglect. Ya'qūb Ṣarrūf, Najīb al-Ḥaddād, and Faraḥ Anṭūn used Scott's literature of moral values and produced political, ethical instructions for a growing Arab public sphere. Their work with chivalry and the Crusades compels us to review the idea of Arabic adab, whose customary translation as belles-lettres proves insufficient as we closely read didactic literature. تتناول هذه المقالة ترجمات واقتباسات عربية لرواية والتر سكوت التعويذة The Talismanنشرت ما بين ١٨٩٠ و ١٩٢٠. ترى المقالة أن عدداً من المؤلفين والمترجمين العرب قد رأوا إمكانية تعليمية مفيدة في اﻷدب الإنجليزي الحديث حول الحروب الصليبية ، رغم إهمال هذه الظاهرة بحثياً إلى حد كبير . فقد استخدم كل من يعقوب صروف ونجيب الحداد وفرح أنطون الرواية لما فيها من مبادئ وإرشادات أخلاقية متوجهين إلى جمهور عربي أدبي . وتجبرنا كتاباتهم هذه على إعادة التفكير في مفهوم ((الأدب العربي الكلاﺳﻴﻜﻲ)) حيث تعد ترجمته التقليدية باعتبارها belles-lettres قاصرة في ضوء قراءة متعمقة لمثل هذا النوع من الأدب التوجيهي .]
