Abstract

[In this testimony, the author muses on some 70 years working as a journalist, editor, literary critic, and translator. With a BA in journalism, his early preoccupation with literature was sidelined by writing about politics and current affairs, the cornerstone of newspapers. The experience of detention in 1952 eventually led to nearly full-time dedication to literature as a safer and more lasting pursuit than writing about politics. A participant in major literary salons and seminars, he edited poetry collections, published volumes of profiles of writers of his acquaintance, corresponded with Arab intellectuals, contributed to encyclopedias, and wrote literary criticism including one of the first articles on Naguib Mahfouz. في هذه الشهادة الشخصية ، يتأمل الكاتب ما يناهز سبعين عاماً من العمل في مجالات الصحافة والتحرير والنقد الأدبي والترجمة . فبعد حصوله على البكالوريوس في الصحافة ، اضطر إلى أن يحيل الأدب إلى هامش اهتماماته بحكم الأولوية التي توليها الصحف للسياسة والأحداث الجارية . ولكن تجربة الاعتقال ﻔﻲ عام ١٩٥٢ أفضت فيما بعد إلى ما يشبه التفرغ الكامل للأدب بحثاً عن الأمان الذي قد لا توفره الكتابة السياسة . وبالإضافة إلى تردده الدائم على الندوات والصالونات الأدبية ، قام الكاتب بتحرير دواوين شعرية ، ونشر دراسات عن كتّاب عرفهم شخصياً وتراسل مع مفكرين عرب . كما أسهم في عدد من الموسوعات وله كتب في النقد الأدبي . وهو من أوائل الذين قدموا نجيب محفوظ للقراء .]
