[تناقش هذه المقالة الصداقة في شعر المتنبي وجون ملتون، مؤكدةً أن الصداقة عند الشاعرين لم تكن إلا أداة استعانا بها في ممارسة حريتهما في الكتابة الفنية. فقد أﺧﻠﺺ الشاعران للشعر أكثر من إخلاصهما للصديق. يدحض كاتب المقالة أيضاً نظرية أن المتنبي ((باع)) نفسه وكرامته لسيف الدولة. فالحق أن المتنبي وجد حريته في شعر المديح، فكان المديح عنده مناسبة لترك نفسه على سجيتها وليس هدفاً لذاته. تركّز المقالة أيضاً على رغبة جون ملتون في كتابة ملحمة كبرى، وهو هدف استغرق موهبته كلها تقريباً، وجعل الصداقة ثانوية في شعره . This article tackles friendship in the poetry of al-Mutanabbi and John Milton. It argues that both poets were more faithful to the art of poetry than to their relationships, and that their friends and acquaintances were less important to them than their poems. Both downplayed their friendships for the sake of their poetic creations. The author contradicts the theory that al-Mutanabbi "sold" his dignity and art for the satisfaction of Sayf al-Dawla, or any other power. He proposes that al-Mutannabi actually found his freedom in panegyric poetry, which he used as a vehicle for the spontaneous overflow of his creative talent. Milton, on the other hand, found no such freedom in the panegyric; he devoted his huge talent to writing an epic, turning friendship into a secondary comcern.]
