Abstract

[Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay "Thoreau" reveals the crucial aspects of the famous friendship of the two writers more clearly than any other text by either writer or their biographers. On the surface, it sums up Emerson's response to Thoreau from initial admiration to misgivings that became disappointment to the final ambivalence in Emerson's view of, and attitude toward, Thoreau; but on a deeper level, it exposes this relationship as a conflicted one driven by a power struggle and complicated by homosocial factors. This articles demonstrates how Emerson mainly projects a limited and negative image of Thoreau that would repel middle-class readers. يكشف مقال رالف والدو إمرسون، ((ثورو))، عن الجوانب الأساسية والحاسمة للصداقة الشهيرة بين الكاتبين بصورة أكثر وضوحاَ من أى نص لأي منهما، أو مما کُتب عن سيرتهما أوأدبهما. يوضح المقال تغير نظرة إمرسون لثورو من الإعجاب الأوﻟﻲ إلى الشكوك الممزوجة بخيبة الأمل إلى الاضطراب في مواقفه تجاه ﺛﻮﺭﻭ في أواخر أيام حياة الأخير. ولكن الاهم من ذلك، أن المقال يكشف أن أساس العلاقة بين الرجلين كان الصراع للاستحواذ على مجالهما الاجتماعي والفكري، وهو صراع ازداد تعقيداً بسبب العلاقة الحميمة بين الرجلين. توضح هذه المقالة أن إمرسون يقدم لقرائهما من الطبقة الوسطى صورة ﻣﻨﻘﻮﺻﺔ وسالبه عن ثورو .]
