Abstract

[The article argues that writings by prominent religious authorities in eighteenth-century Egypt represent intimacy between males as a source of authority in the Sufi milieu and beyond. Love and trust between men are described as both a source of blessing and a mechanism for learning right behavior and judgment. A literary reading of discourse surrounding companionship (suhba) in 'Abd al-Raḥmān al-Jabartī's descriptions of intimate friendships between scholars and Sufis, merchants and amirs, in his 'Ajā'ib al-āthār fi-l-tarājim wa-l-akhbār reflects a more general societal view of interpersonal intimacy that provides social mobility for marginalized sectors of society. تناقش هذه المقالة تصوير كتابات كبار رجال الدين في مصر في القرن الثامن عشر للعلاقة الحميمة بين الرجال باعتبارها مصدراً من مصادر السلطة في المحيط الصوفي وخارجه، حيث تقدَّم الحب والثقة بين الرجال بوصفهما مصدراً للبركة وسبيلاً من سبل تعلم السلوك الصحيح. تحلل ﺍﻟﻤﻘﺎﻟﺔ وصف عبد الرحمن الجبرتي للصحبة والصداقات الحميمة بين العلماء والفقراء والتجار والأمراء في كتابه عجائب الآثارفي التراجم والأخبار باعتباره نموذجاً يعكس وجهة نظر شائعة في ذلك الوقت ترى أن العلاقات الحميمة بين الأشخاص ﺘﻤﻬﱢﺪ للصعود الطبقي لبعض شرائح المجتمع المهمَّشة .]
