This article argues that the fiction of Latin American magic realism, particularly in Jorge Luis Borges’s short stories and Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, draws on Arabic sources. An Arabic archive is accumulated through Islamic references in Borges’s stories, and the legacy of The Arabian Nights. Borges conjures a dialogue and a productive literary interchange with Arab Islamic figures, including Averroës, whereas García Márquez—who was influenced by Borges—incorporates from the archive what suits him to express a uniquely Latin American reality.]
