[تتناول هذه الشهادة خطوات فارقة في مسيرة تاريخ المفكر العراقي، متتبعة دراساته الجامعية والعليا في جامعة شيكاغو، وانتقاله من مجال الاقتصاد ٳلى الدراسات البينية تحت رعاية ((لجنة الفكر الاجتماعي)). وتعرض المقالة زخم الحياة الثقافية ذات النزعة الٳنسانية التي ميزت جامعة شيكاغو في خمسينيات القرن العشرين، ودور الأساتذة الأمريكيين والأوروبيين في تشكيل عقول طلابهم في الوقت ذاته الذي كانوا يشجعونهم فيه على التميز والجدية. وعلى الرغم من هامشية دور الحضارات غير الغربية حينذاك، فقد شجع هذا السياق مهدي على البحث في الفكر العربي الوسيط . This testimonial essay presents steps in the trajectory of an Iraqi scholar. It traces his undergraduate and graduate studies at Chicago University, and his transfer from the field of Economics to that of interdisciplinary studies under the auspices of the Committee of Social Thought. The essay depicts the sense of intellectual excitement and "humanitas" at Chicago University in the 1950s, and the role of American and European professors in shaping the minds of their students while encouraging them to be both original and rigorous. Though the role of non-Western civilizations was marginalized, Mahdi was encouraged to pursue research in medieval Arab thought.]
