Abstract

[تقدم هذه المقالة نبذة مختصرة عن قسم اللغة الٳنجليزية وآدابها، بجامعة القاهرة. يتناول القسم الأول من المقالة نشأة الجامعة المصرية ورغبة ﺍﻟﻤﺆسسين في ٳنشاء ﻣﺆسسة علمية تُعنى باكتساب العلم والمعرفة، وتأسيس القسم النساﺋﻲ بالجامعة منذ البداية. ثم يتعرض الجزء الثاني ٳلى تأسيس قسم اللغة الٳنجليزية واعتماده في التدريس على الأساتذة الأجانب ثم تحوله ٳلى الأساتذة المصريين عقب ثورة ١٩٥٢. وأخيراً، تتناول المقالة بعض الجوانب التي تتعلق بالقسم منذ السبعينيات حتى الوقت الحاضر. ثم ينتهي المقال بطرح تساﺅل عن دور أقسام اللغة الٳنجليزية في عالم تمثل فيه الثقافة الناطقة بالٳنجليزية الثقافة ﺍﻟﺴﺎﺋﺪﺓ، وفي عالم لا مناص فيه من ذلك التفاعل مع الغرب . This essay offers a brief historical overview of the Department of English Language and Literature, Cairo University. The first part addresses key issues that relate to the establishment of the Egyptian university: the prevalence of the desire for knowledge acquisition, the admission of women from the very early stages, and the interaction with the West, particularly Europe. The second part traces the transition of the Department of English from foreign influence to Egyptian management. The essay ends with a question on the role that departments of English can play in a world where English has become the lingua franca, and where interaction between the East and the West is taking various forms.]
