Abstract

[This article explores V. S. Naipaul's view of Islam in his travelogues about the Islamic World, mainly focusing on two books by the Trinidadian author of Indian origin and British nationality: Among the Believers: An Islamic Journey (1982) and Beyond Belief: Islamic Excursions Among the Converted Peoples (1998). The article unmasks Naipaul's biased view of Islam and the Islamic World and his lumping together of historical Islam and modern political Islam - a kind of Islam dictated by the clash of cultures towards the end of the twentieth century. The article deconstructs these views which are based on personal observations rather than on true historical knowledge. ﺗﺘﻨﺎﻭﻝ ﻫﺬﻩ ﺍﻟﻤﻘﺎﻟﺔ ﻧﻈﺮﺓ ﭪ٠ ﺱ٠ ﻧﺎﻳﭙﻮﻝ ﺇﻟﻰ ﺍﻻﺳﻼﻡ ﻓﻲ ﻛﺘﺐ ﺭﺣﻼﺗﻪ ﺇﻟﻰ ﺍﻟﻌﺎﻟﻢ ﺍﻹﺳﻼﻣﻲ، ﻣﺮﻛّﺰﺓ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻛﺘﺎﺑﻲّ ﺍﻟﻤﺆﻟﻒ ﺍﻟﺘﺮﻳﻨﻴﺪﺍﺩﻱ، ﻫﻨﺪﻱ ﺍﻷﺻﻞ، ﺑﺮﻳﻄﺎﻧﻲ ﺍﻟﺠﻨﺴﻴﺔ: ﺑﻴﻦ ﺍﻟﻤﺆﻣﻨﻴﻦ: ﺭﺣﻠﺔ ﺇﺳﻼﻣﻴﺔ (١٩٨٢) ﻭﺃﺑﻌﺪ ﻣﻦ ﺍﻹﻳﻤﺎﻥ: ﺭﺣﻼﺕ ﺇﺳﻼﻣﻴﺔ ﺇﻟﻰ ﺍﻟﺸﻌﻮﺏ ﺍﻟﻤﺮﺗﺪﺓ ( ١٩٩٨)٠ ﻭﺗﻜﺸﻒ ﺍﻟﻤﻘﺎﻟﺔ ﻧﻈﺮﺓ ﻧﺎﻳﭙﻮﻝ ﺍﻟﻤﻨﺤﺎﺯﺓ ﺿﺪ ﺍﻹﺳﻼﻡ ﻭﺍﻟﻌﺎﻟﻢ ﺍﻹﺳﻼﻣﻲ، ﻭﺟﻤﻌﻪ ﺑﻴﻦ ﺍﻹﺳﻼﻡ ﺍﻟﺘﺎﺭﻳﺨﻲ ﻭﺍﻹﺳﻼﻡ ﺍﻟﺴﻴﺎﺳﻲ ﺍﻟﺤﺪﻳﺚ - ﻭﺍﻟﻨﻮﻉ ﺍﻷﺧﻴﺮ ﻳﺤﺪﺩﻩ ﺻﺪﺍﻡ ﺍﻟﺜﻘﺎﻓﺎﺕ ﻓﻲ ﺃﻭﺍﺧﺮ ﺍﻟﻘﺮﻥ ﺍﻟﻌﺸﺮﻳﻦ٠ ﻭﺗﺤﺎﻭﻝ ﺍﻟﻤﻘﺎﻟﺔ ﺗﻔﻜﻴﻚ ﻫﺬﻩ ﺍﻟﻨﻈﺮﺓ ﺍﻟﺘﻲ ﺗﻘﻮﻡ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺍﻟﻤﻼﺣﻈﺎﺕ ﺍﻟﺸﺨﺼﻴﺔ ﻋﻮﺿﺎﹰ ﻋﻦ ﺍﻟﻤﻌﺮﻓﺔ ﺍﻟﺘﺎﺭﻳﺨﻴﺔ، ﻣﺴﺘﻌﻴﻨﺔ ﺑﺒﻌﺾ ﺭﻭﺍﻳﺎﺕ ﻧﺎﻳﭙﻮﻝ ﺍﻷﺧﺮﻯ ﻭﺣﻮﺍﺭﺍﺗﻪ ﺍﻟﻤﻨﺸﻮﺭﺓ، ﻭﻛﺎﺷﻔﺔ ﻋﻦ ﻫﻮﺱ ﻧﺎﻳﭙﻮﻝ ﺿﺪ ﺍﻹﺳﻼﻡ، ﻭﺍﻟﻌﺮﺏ ﻭﺍﻟﻤﺴﻠﻤﻴﻦ ﻓﻲ ﺭﺣﻠﺘﻪ ﻷﺩﺑﻴﺔ ﺍﻟﻄﻮﻳﻠﺔ٠]
