Abstract

[The perception of the US in the Arab World lacks serious research, and is often based primarily on the actions of US government. The thesis of this article is that, in the Arab World, we have defined America far too narrowly, focusing only on official America. Exploring the "other America," as Edward Said put it, offers a far more promising prospect. The article analyzes the reelection of Bush as an example to illustrate the way in which one face of America-official America-can be accurately portrayed, but it remains insufficient, unless put in its broader context of competing faces, voices, and strains. Besides the forces of intolerance and militarization, there is another oppositional America that is amenable to dialogue and cooperation. /في غياب البحث العلمي، ظل تناول الولايات المتحدة في العالم العربي أسيراﹰ لمجموعة من الانطباعات والصور النمطية المفرطة في سلبيتها أو إيجابيتها٠ وتقدم هذه الدراسة أطروحة محددة، مٶداها أن صورة أمريكا مبنية على فهم قاصر يختزل مجتمعاﹰ بالغ التعقيد والتشابك٠ وهي صورة مصدرها ليس فقط مجموعة من السياسات الأمريكية السلبية، وإنما يسهم في تشكيلها، بنفس القدر، تقصير عربي في متابعة الشأن الأمريكي متابعة دقيقة٠ ومن ثم، فإن الصورة قاتمة بالفعل، ما لم ننتبه إلى "أمريكا الأخرى" - المناهض لأمريكا الرسمية - كما أطلق عليها إدوارد سعيد٠ وهي التي لا يمكن اكتشافها دون دراسة نقدية خلاقة للواقع الأمريكي من جوانبه المختلفة، تسمح برٶية قسمات مهمة لذلك الكيان الضخم، على نحو يفتح الباب أمام إيجاد ﺑﺪﺍﺋﻞ أخرى للتعامل معه٠‬]
