Abstract

[In this valedictory speech delivered at a graduation ceremony, Shoukri-who served for more than four decades as a professor at AUC-spells out her view of the role of the university, valuing its function as a place where the minds can explore and redefine rather than a utilitarian institution attending to the immediate material needs of the society. As a faculty member of an American institution of higher learning in Egypt, Shoukri insists on the vital importance of differences of views and cultures in enlivening the debate of free minds. She focuses on literature as a means of enriching the mind and allowing young scholars to learn from the masters without limiting themselves to past visions. /‮ألقت دوريس شكري هذه الكلمة في حفل تخرج طلاب الدراسات العليا في الجامعة الأمريكية (٢٠٠٢) بعد أكثر من أربعة عقود عملت فيها أستاذة في تلك الجامعة٠ وتعبر فيها عن ﺁرائها حول دور الجامعة، وهو الدور الذي تكمن قيمته في رأيها في توفير مكان تتفتح فيه العقول على المعرفة وإعادة الاكتشاف، لا في كونها مٶسسة ذات توجه نفعي تلبي للمجتمع احتياجاته المادية المباشرة٠ وتٶكد شكري من موقعها كعضو هيئة تدريس في مٶسسة أمريكية للتعليم العالي في مصر على أن تعدد وجهات النظر واختلاف الثقافات دافع لجدل مثمر بين العقول الحرة٠ كما ترى في الأدب تحديداﹰ طريقاﹰ لإثراء العقل وفرصة لدارسيه من الشباب للتعلم من كبار الكتاب والمفكرين من دون التقيد برٶاهم٠‬]
