Abstract

[This interview (with an introductory essay) focuses on the importance of the study of oral accounts and history as a source for examining social and political changes. Oral life histories and accounts, as expressed by social actors, need to be reconstituted and connected to the wider socio-political context. Through this approach, the relationship between the individual experience and the changing larger structures could be studied, and the voices of those who live in the shadow of, or away from, the formal space could be heard. Excerpts of Laila Doss's life accounts were collected between 1997 and 1998 by the interviewer. They evoke her personal life experience and raise questions concerning the position of women in Egyptian society since the early 1930s. Doss, a pioneering activist in upgrading the life of the dispossessed, reflects on her active contribution in founding and establishing al-Jam'iya al-Nisa'iya li-Tahsin al-Siha (The Women's Society for Health Improvement). This encounter represents a vivid account of Egypt's development as preceived by an Egyptian upper class women. /تتعرص ﻣﻘﺪﻣﺔ هذه المقالة لأهمية دراسة السير الذاتية والتاريخ الشفاﻫﻲ كأحد المصادر ﻟﻔﻬﻢ التغيرات ﺍﻻجتماعية وﺍﻟﺴﻴﺎﺳﻴﺔ٠ ﻭﺗﻨﺎﻗﺶ أهمية إعادة بناء وربط تلك المرويات الشفاهية، كماعبر عنها أصحابها، بالإطار الاجتماعي والسياسي العام ﻟﺪﺭﺍﺳﺔ العلاقة بين الفرد، كمحرك اجتماعي، وبين متغيرات البنية ﺍﻷﻭﺳﻊ٠ ويسمح هذا الإطار ﺑﺎﻟﺘﻌﺒﻴﺮ عن أصوات الذين يعيشون في الظل أو بعيدﺍﹰ عن المركز٠ تتناول هذه المقلة مقتطفات من السيرة الذاتية لليلى دوس كما سرﺩتها في لقاءات تمت بينها وبين الكاتبة عامي ١٩٩٧-٠١٩٩٨ وتتمثل أهمية تلك اللقاءات في كونها تعبر عن رﺅية ﺧﺎﺻﺔ لامرأة من الطبقة ﺍﻟﻌﻠﻴﺎ عاصرت عدة حقب سياسية ﻣﺨﺘﻠﻔﺔ وساهمت ﺑﺸﻜﻞ فعال في الحياة المصرية العامة٠ وتدور هذه اللقاءات حول قضايا المرأة في المجتمح المصري وصراعها من أجل ﺗﺤﻘﻴﻖ ﺫﺍﺗﻬﺎ٠ كما تعبر ليلى دوس عن مشوارها في العمل ﺍﻷﻫﻠﻲ ومساهمتها في تأسيس الجمعية ﺍﻟﻨﺴﺎﺋﻴﺔ لتحسين ﺍﻟﺼﺤﺔ والصراع الذي دار من أجل استمرار هذه الجمعية٠ وتمثل هذه اللقاءات شهادة حول أربعة عقود من تطور المجتمح المصري كما عايشته امرأة مصرية من الطبقة العليا٠]
