Abstract

[Leila Aboulela presents herself and is left feeling ambivalent about the complications of such a discourse. Using extracts from her published writings and relating them to personal incidents, the writer describes some of the difficulties of her move from Sudan to Scotland. She finds encouragement in the Sufi saying, "Travel away from home and the difficulties will be a medicine for your ego's badness, you will return softer and wiser." And she finds a new life as a writer. She discusses some of the challenges she has faced in writing autobiography (accuracy, context, what to stress and what to leave out) and concludes that for her, writing fiction offers more freedom and comes more naturally. It is better, she concludes, to present a specific story, a smoothed-out model. /تقدم ليلى أبو العلا سيرتها في شكل شهادة يصاحبها شعور متردد فيما يخص تعقيدات مسألة الدقة٠ من الأفضل - في اعتقادها - أن تقدم قصة ترويها بنموذجها المصقول من أن تحكي ذاتها٠ تكتب ليلى أبو العلا عن نشأتها في ﺍﻟﺨﺮﻃﻮﻡ، مستخدمة استشهادات من أعمالها المنشورة ورابطة إياها بتجارب شخصية٠ تصف الكاتبة بعض الصعاب المرتبطة بانتقالها من السودان إلى اسكتلندة٠ وتجد الكاتبة دعماﹰ كبيراﹰ في المقولة الصوفية التي تدعو إلي الرحيل عن الأوطان كي يجد المرتحل في الصعاب دواءً لعلله ويعود أكثر وعياً وحكمة٠ وهكذا تكتشف ليلى أبو العلا حياة جديدة ككاتبة وهي في الغربة٠ وتتناول الكاتبة بعض التحديات التي واجهتها في كتابة السيرة الذاتية (الدقة، السياق، ما يجب التأكيد عليه وما يجب حذفه) مستنتجة أن الكتابة الروائية بالنسبة لها تفسح مجالاﹰ أكثر حرية وتلقائية وخيالاﹰ من الكتابة عن الذات٠]
