Abstract

[Sophia Poole (1804-91) was the sister of the Arabist Edward William Lane. She visited Egypt and wrote a book, in three volumes, about Egyptian women which was meant to be a companion book to Lane's Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians (1836). The Englishwoman in Egypt (1844-46), always regarded as a correct and objective representation of Egyptian women, is also a reflection of the writer's own visualization and inscription of her identity. Poole, this article argues, defined herself as both an English person and a woman, two aspects that were hard to reconcile at the time. Poole was faced with a conflict which she tried to resolve by both complying with her gender identity and creating a role for herself as a functional Britisher. Yet, she did this largely at the expense of Egyptian women. / صوفيا پول (١٨٠٤-١٨٩١) هي أخت المستعرب الإنجليزي إدوارد وليم لين٠ وقد قامت بزيارة لمصر في رفقة أخيها وسجلت انطباعاتها عن المرأة المصرية في كتاب المرأة الإنجليزية في مصر (ثلاثة مجلدات) - ﻗُﺼﺪ به أن يختص بوصف نساء مصر وأن يكون مكملاﹰ لكتاب لين عن عادات وتقاليد المصريين٠ وقد استمدت التحليلات التي تعرضت لدراسة كتاب پول المنشور في ١٨٤٤-١٨٤٦ منهجها في الأغلب من المنهج المطبق في تحليل نص لين فكانت قرءة نص پول على أنه ((موضوعي))، ولكن للنص جوانب أخرى، فهو يعكس ﺭﺅﻳﺔ الكاتبة لذاتها وكتابتها لهويتها٠ وقد كتبت پول هويتها على أنها امرأة وإنجليزية في وقت واحد برغم صعوبة دمج هذين التعريفين المتناقضين وقتذاك٠ وفي قراءات لاحقة للنص قام النقاد بالتركيز على أحد هذين التعريفين على التوالي، فهناك من قرأه على أنه إسهام إنجليزي وربطه بجهود لين، مما تسبب في معظم الأحيان في خبو صوت الكاتبة وتواريه خلف سلطة أخيها٠ وفي السنوات الأخيرة ظهرت بعض القراءات ﺍﻟﻨﺴﺎﺋﻴﺔ للنص والتي تركز عليه كعلامة على كفاءة النساء وإسهاماتهن في مجال الكتابة٠ يحاول هذا البحث أن يجمع بين ﻫﺬﻳﻦ الجانبين ﻟﻠﻜﺎﺗﺒﺔ ليظهر كيف أن هذا التناقض كان يسبب صراﻋﺎﹰ للكاتبة استطاعت أن تتعداه بالتجاوب والخضوع لتعريفها كامرأة وخلق دور لها ﻳﺆﻛﺪ على هويتها الإمبريالية، ولكن ذلك التصالح مح النفس كان في الأغلب على حساب النساء المصريات٠]
