Abstract

[This article presents a scholarly edition of an important epistle of Ibn 'Arabī on "Saint hood" and "Prophecy" (al-Wilāya Wa'l Nubuwwa), not published before, with an introductory study of its authenticity, its place in the works of Ibn 'Arabī, and a critical analysis of its mystic orientation. Three levels of discourse are discussed: (1) the juridical and exegetical; (2) the Sunni and orthodox; (3) the Philosophical and mystical. Ibn 'Arabī compares and contrasts the "saint" (al-walī) with the "prophet" (al-nabī), using the Quranic story of al-Khiḍr and Moses. He forges a mystical vocabulary and refers to earlier mystics by allusions and direct quotations. "Unity of Being" (Waḥdat al-Wujūd), characteristic of Ibn 'Arabī, pervades the text.]
