Khebra: On the Hymen

Abstract
This project is an educative and critical coming of age gift in the form of a regularly produced publication written in Egyptian dialect Arabic. The first volume tackles the misinformation regarding the hymen and its widely perceived (but invalid) relationship with whether a female has previously had sex or not. Each volume is centered around a specific topic that typically causes discomfort or violence to the Egyptian girl regarding her reproductive system. Accompanying the publication, there is a social media presence in the form of an Instagram account that regularly posts the information distributed in the printed publication. Coming of age is typically the time in which the Egyptian girl starts experiencing this taboo surrounding her body. Therefore the project’s primary aim is to fight against this taboo through increasing friendly conversation, spreading scientifically accurate information and dispelling common myths regarding this topic
