Abstract

This study analyzes the social effects of migration on Sudanese labor migrants 􀀉11d their families both in the host and the home country. This study also examines the problems concerning integration (social, economic and political) and citizenship of Sudanese labor migrants and their families in the society of the United Arab Emirates. This work is the result of a fieldwork that I conducted among Sudanese labor migrants in the UAE. The method used for collecting the data is qualitative. I conducted in-depth interviews with twenty-five Sudanese persons working in the UAE. I either visited the respondents in their own houses or met them at Al Nadie al Soudani (the Sudanese club) where the Sudanese migrants gather. In addition to the interviews, I relied on my own personal observations, participant observation and a sho1t questionnaire. In addition, in order to analyze the data collected I draw on two concepts. Those are the pe1manence of temporary migration and transnational ism. The first concept deals with migration, which lasts for long duration of time, the second concept deals with the migrants who found themselves living in a divided society between home and the host country.
