Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out if the Cable News Network (CNN) has an effect on media and business decision-makers in Egypt. The criteria used to define media and business decision-makers are those people in high level positions that are responsible for taking and executing decisions. Media decision-makers (MDMs) were defined as people in positions calling for decision-making in the media market, such as magazine and newspaper editors-inchief, and news agency bureau chiefs in Egypt. Business decision-makers (BDMs) were defined as people in positions calling for decision-making in the business field, such as general managers, business owners, and directors of companies in Egypt. MDMs and BDMs were selected on an availability basis and included only those with access to CNN. They were then contacted to participate in intensive interviews conducted by the researcher. Theories and literature studied were used to formulate the main hypothesis that CNN does have an effect of MD Ms and BDMs in Egypt. CNN is a product of globalization and is an important source of global news and information among decision-makers and the elite in Egypt. Although Egypt has a strong print media system, it does not operate with the same freedom that foreign satellite broadcasting does. It was found that CNN is a major news source that both MDMs and BDMs tum to it for information. Although it was found that CNN is a preferred for breaking news and live reports, the results show that other foreign channels are used for indepth analysis. Conclusions are that CNN does have an effect on the decision-making process of MD M's and BDM's in Egypt.
