Abstract

[This article explores fear of death as represented in George Saunders’s Lincoln in the Bardo. The novel gives 166 characters the opportunity to portray the day the son of Abraham Lincoln dies against the backdrop of the American Civil War. Employing terror management theory, the article reads characters’ accounts as their attempts to deal with the looming danger of death. Further, it analyzes the characters’ levels of awareness of their fear, their dream of immortality, the various terror management techniques they use, and how effective these techniques are. تهدف هذه المقالة إلى تحليل الرؤية التي تقدمها رواية لينكولن في الباردو لجورج سوندرز عن الخوف من الموت . تدور الرواية حول وفاة ويلي ابن إبراهام لينكولن أثناء الحرب الأهلية الأمريكية ، حيث تقوم مائة وست وستون شخصية بتقديم سردياتهم حول وفاة الابن ، وكذلك قصصهم الخاصة . وتوظِّف المقالة نظرية السيطرة على الخوف من أجل قراءة السرديات التي تقدمها شخصيات الرواية باعتبارها محاولات للتصدي لخطر الموت المحدق . كما تبحث المقالة في المستويات المختلفة للوعي بهذا الخوف ، والأساليب المستخدمة للسيطرة عليه ، ومدى فاعلية هذه الأساليب .]
