Abstract

[Published at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, James Baldwin’s short story “Going to Meet the Man” takes an unflinching look into the legacy of spectacle lynchings on the white (male) American psyche. This article investigates how Baldwin’s narrative reclaims the act of witnessing as a Black prerogative, by situating his story within the context of traditional representations of lynchings, such as photographs taken by the mob or people complicit in the mob’s actions. Baldwin’s shift of the spectators’/readers’ gaze towards the psyche of the perpetrators allows him to establish troubling connections between Jim Crow and modern police brutality. .تلقي قصة جيمس بالدوين «الذهاب لمقابلة الرجل» ، التي كتبت في أوج حركة الحقوق المدنية، نظرة ثاقبة على أحد موروثات المجتمع الأمريكي الأبيض، ألا وهي الإعدامات العلنية للسود وتأثيرها في نفسية الرجل الأمريكي الأبيض. تحلل المقالة أسلوب بالدوين السردي الذي يمكّن السود من استرداد حقهم في الشهادة على الحدث، من خلال النظر إلى القصة في سياق التمثيل النمطي لمظاهر الإعدامات العلنية الذي عادة ما يتجلى في الصور الفوتوغرافية التي يلتقطها شهود الحدث أو الضالعون فيه. يقلب بالدوين وجهة نظر القارئ وذلك بتركيز انتباهه على نفسية مرتكب الجريمة، وهو ما يسمح بإثارة تداعيات مقلقة بين قوانين جيم كرو العنصرية ووحشية الشرطة في العصر الحديث]
