Abstract

[This article examines three issues relating to the journey. First, it studies the dynamics of the Arabic travel text as a genre distinct in its components and discourse. The genre has produced texts marked by their cultural and historical contexts, and which are sites of convergence of various genres and modes of expression. The author opts for the term "travel text," instead of "travel literature," thus freeing the journey from the limitations of the literary discipline. Second, the article sheds light on two directions in journey discourse: the Self and the Other.
