Islamic Law and the Modern Egyptian Legal System

Mohamed Serag, The American University in Cairo

Description or Abstract

This lecture by Mohamed Serag, professor of Islamic studies, will tackle the issue of the integration of Islamic law into the modern Egyptian legal system. Since the late 19th century and throughout the 20th century, various legal scholars (such as Muhammad Qadri Pasha and Abd al-Razzaq al-Sanhuri) have developed modern legal concepts, codes and programs that have their bases in traditional Islamic law. Their work forms the foundation of the modern Egyptian legal system.
