Translating Egyptian Colloquial Poetry: The Case of Sayyed Darwish

A Virtual lecture organized by the Center for Translation Studies By Mai Serhan, MSt Candidate in Creative Writing at the University of Oxford Tune in and listen to Mai Serhan take us through the creative process of translating Sayyed Darwish’s Egyptian songs into English. Serhan explains the personal choices and linguistic sacrifices that she makes as a translator and a poet in order to keep the integrity of the work while staying true to her poetic craft. She also introduces her book This is What has Come to Be, an English translation of Sayyed Darwish’s songs which can be found at Diwan Bookstores.
