Title

Cultural Machine Translation: Challenges and Solutions

Author / Creator

Fernand Cohen

Description or Abstract

The Center for Translation Studies presents an interdisciplinary lecture by Fernand Cohen, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Drexel University. In his talk entitled "Cultural Machine Translation: Challenges and Solutions", Dr. Cohen shares some of his expertise and work in progress on machine translation, where he has helped develop a probabilistic language model. Some of the main translation challenges emerge in unfamiliar cultural contexts and when faced with polysemy and ambiguous words. Machine translation - most reliable with simple texts - will only become a successful tool once able to disambiguate words and become sensitive to their cultural meanings, Cohen concludes.
