Egyptian Proverbs Illustrated
The aim of this project is to promote cultural literacy within the Egyptian communities through the understanding of proverbs. Proverbs are popular sayings expressing a common truth that stood the test of time; enduring and timeless ornaments of wisdom that are passed on from generation to generation providing us with traditional insight through humor, sarcasm, and guidance. They are essentially the accumulation of people’s experiences that can trace all the way back to the Ancient Egyptians. With today’s technological advancements and considering factors such as globalization, the media and other western influences, we are exposed to everything around us. Consequently, current generations have become less in touch with their culture and language to the extent that often times they choose to use English proverbs rather than those from their mother tongue. As Egyptians, we’re considered very expressive and humorous people, and this is interestingly reflected in our proverbs and the amount of creativity and humor that is put into them. So as a means to revive, record and treasure an important part of the true Egyptian culture, this project involved collecting proverbs and visually illustrating them to create a better understanding of them and add comical, exaggerative elements that compliment their true meaning.
