Abstract

Wekalet El Balah is the biggest fabric market in Egypt, it’s located in the center of Cairo next to Boulaq, Imbaba, Zamalek, Downtown, Shubra and Garden City. It has all kinds of fabrics as well as garments and many other products. “Wekalet El Balah” by Salma Saad Srour is a mobile application (Available in both Arabic and English) that aims to enhance Wekalet El Balah’s visitors’ experiences. Salma’s goal was to let people get to know more about Egyptian local markets by encouraging them to visit Wekalet El Balah as a start. The Mobile Application has a list of shops there as well as their locations on the map to help users navigate. Also, there is a list of landmarks to help users reach their desired destinations (especially shops with no shop signs) easily. Furthermore, Wekalet El balah has several historical places for people who are interested in historical monuments. Moreover the application offers users a list of convenience tips for users before going, as well as a brief history about the place with the reasons behind its naming, alongside some pictures from Wekalet El Balah itself. These pictures are for firsttime visitors to know about the atmosphere of the place before going. This Mobile application is a tool to help visitors make the best out of their experience as well as encourage them to discover more about forgotten treasures in Cairo.

This piece of art work is part of the "Interdisciplinarity and Design Third Graduating Class of Graphic Design Students The American University in Cairo – Spring 2018" catalog. Held at the AUC Sharjah Art Gallery on December 21st, 2018, the "ALT w Shidd" exhibition showcased bachelor projects by the third Graduating class of Graphic Design students. This year’s projects were divided into 5 panels according to their tackled themes. The panels included “Digital Design”, “Fashion Design”, “Publication Design”, “Advertising”, and “Retail and Branding”. A team of internal and external jury members were invited to each panel in order to provide ourstudents with critical feedback and evaluate the final outcome of their projects according to conducted research, applied methodologies, and undertaken creative design process. Jury members from within AUC included Ahmed Ellaithy (TTO -Technology Transfer Office) Ahmad Saqfalhait (GRDN), Ayman Ismail (Venture Lab), Brenda Segone (ARTV), Heba Safeyeldine (ARCH), Marwan Fayed (GRDN), May Hasebou (GRDN), Mahamad Khalil (GRDN), and Sherif Samy (GRDN). As for external jurors; they included Amira Aboulmagd (Al-Shorouk Publishing), Majd Elsherif (Matter Branding), Mohab Anis (Innovety), Nigel Fletcher-Jones (AUC Press), Sahar Zoghby (FP7), Samy Elias(Sahara Printing), Sawsan Mourad (El Beit Magazine), and Suzie Graiess (Association for the Protection of the Environment).
