The American Research Center in Egypt red Monastery Conservation Project: Community Engagement in Heritage Preservation
Description or Abstract
The American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE) has been carrying out cultural heritage conservation work with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) since 1994. A substantial part of this program has resulted in the recovery, re-evaluation and publication of hitherto obscure examples of Coptic art and architecture at different locations throughout Egypt. Notwithstanding the visually impressive results, the most important, challenging and rewarding component is connecting heritage and community in the process of preservation. This talk will focus on the Red Monastery Church at Sohag where ARCE has carried out a multi-faceted conservation project since 2003.
